The myth about having a great website is that people will still find you on the internet. This is not true. Each website requires relevant content which is placed strategically on each page, relative ALT tags as well as certain elements in your source code. If your site does not have these and other key elements, you could be losing valuable clients which in turn means lost revenue!

What does Search Engine Optimization, or SEO in its abbreviated form, mean? SEO is the marketing technique of preparing a website in order to enhance its chances of being ranked in the top results of a search engine, i.e. Google, Yahoo!, Alta-Vista, etc., when the user types in a relevant search. The process involves updating HTML code (code that is used to create a website) and choosing targeted keyword phrases related the site. A number of factors are important when optimising a website, including the content and structure of the website's copy and page layout, the HTML meta-tags and the submission process. What can SEO do for you? It is the difference between your website being found and being seen by a few hundred people or a few million people.

It is difficult to actually pinpoint which element is more important than the other. Many will argue that keywords and content are more important than relevant images and ALT tags. To help you understand the basics of SEO, below are a few definitions or ideas that can help you understand what SEO is all about.

Keyword Research: Research your keywords. Keywords are specific words that pertain to your website that outline what it is about, the product or the service. For example, Reptile Advertising & Design strategically placed certain keywords such as 'traffic ticket', 'speeding', demerit points', etc. on the website for Ontario Traffic Tickets as well as its co-related websites, Ontario Speeding and Demerit Points . Researching your relevant keywords is pertinent in order to stand out and rank higher than competiting websites.

Brown Man Clothing Co. specifically is geared towards the South Asian community. It was imperative that certain keywords that they felt that their users would input in a search engine be included in the content of the website. If you view the Brown Man Clothing Co. site, you can clearly see specific cultural references that are targetted towards their audience.

Meta Tags: This element is entered into what is called the 'source page' of your website. Your visitor will never see this content but it helps search engines understand what your site is all about and if it is relevant to what the user is searching for. For example, if your site is about your grandmother's specialty jam products, your meta tags may look something like this:

<META NAME="Keywords" content=", jam, homemade jam, strawberry jam, jam with no preservatives, fruit jam, jam how grandmother used to make ">

Meta Description: This special code tells the search engine what your site is about in a condensed version.

<META NAME="Description" CONTENT="Grandmother Ethel's tasty strawberry jam made from scratch with no artifical flavours">

Title: This element can be seen in the top of your browser window. For instance, if you look at the top of this page, it reads, "Reptile Advertising & Design - All About Search Engine Optimization. Let Us Help You Optimize Your Site!" Why is this important? The search engines validates if the title does in fact describe what is on the page. If it is, the search engine will deem the page as relevant content and allows it to rank higher than others. On this page, you will try to include as many of your keywords for your site/page to seem relevant. For instance, as mentioned what the title of this page is, the page is in fact about SEO and its elements. Therefore, the title is relevant as well as its content on the page.

There is no exact science on what works and what does not. With search engines changing and updating their tactics daily, it is pertinent to stay abreast of crucial elements in order for your website to rank higher than your competitors.
